Cards that turn your life total into a payment resource, letting you trade life for cards, mana, or other effects. Necropotence and Greed convert life into raw card draw, Bolas's Citadel lets you cast spells from the top of your library by paying life instead of mana, Phyrexian Arena bleeds you each upkeep for an extra draw, and Aetherflux Reservoir spends fifty life to close out the game. Distinct from lifegain.lifegain_source, which only adds life, and from lifegain.drain, which siphons from opponents rather than spending your own total. Non-land pay-life cards only; fetchlands and shocklands sit with the lands category despite paying life.
